[starttext]Anita Baker (born January 26, 1958) is an eight-time Grammy Award-winning, multi-Platinum rhythm and blues and soul singer and songwriter, renowned for her soaring alto vocal range.

Born in Toledo, Ohio and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Anita Baker began singing in a Baptist church choir at the age of 12. Four years later, while singing with the band Humanity, Baker was approached by bass player David Washington of Chapter 8 to audition for the group.

In 1975, Baker subsequently joined Chapter 8, the most popular group of Detroit at the time. They spent a couple of years playing in and around Detroit and eventually signed a record deal with Ariola. The self-titled album came out in fall 1979, with two singles hitting the R&B charts: "Ready for Your Love" and "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl." The label Ariola Records later ran into financial trouble and the company was purchased by Arista. Arista's executives refused to renew Chapter 8's record deal while Baker was a part of the group. After being rejected, Baker went back home to Detroit and got a job as a receptionist for a local law firm.

In 1981, Otis Smith, the man behind Chapter 8's contract, formed his own label Beverly Glen. Remembering Baker's vocals, he got her telephone number from a Chapter 8 member and called her in late 1982. Baker refused the job at first due to her duties as a receptionist. However, she agreed to sign with the label and try again with a music career. In 1983, Baker released her debut album The Songstress. Two of the album's singles, "Angel" and "No More Tears", became smash hits on the R&B charts. By the spring of 1984, Baker had five chart hits and was close to a gold record.

In 1985, Baker got a major label contract with Elektra Records, a division of Warner Music Group. She released her second album, Rapture in 1986, produced by her friend from Chapter 8, Michael J. Powell This album reafforded her the opportunity to stretch her skills; she wrote "Been So Long", "Watch Your Step" and "Sweet Love". "Sweet Love", "Caught Up In the Rapture", "No One In The World", and "Same Ole Love" became major R&B and Adult Contemporary chart hits during 1986 and 1987, with "Sweet Love" becoming a top ten pop hit as well. By the time "Rapture" had completed its chart run, it had sold 8 million copies worldwide and also earned Baker two Grammys.

In November 1986 when she was returning to Detroit to receive the key of the city, she got engaged to Walter Bridgeforth Jr. whom she'd met on an earlier trip home in January. They were married on Christmas Eve 1987.

In 1987, Baker collaborated with The Winans on the single "Ain't No Need To Worry" and this single led Baker to her third Grammy award. At the same time, she also worked on her follow-up album Giving You The Best That I Got in between a busy performance schedule. This album was released in October 1988. She worked with Michael J. Powell again, and the album became a critical and commercial success, which sold another 5 million copies worldwide. It features such hits as "Just Because" and the title track, which became Baker's biggest pop hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 while going to number one R&B and Adult Contemporary. Critics noted that, single-handedly, through her first two albums, "Anita Baker has set a new standard and helped redefine the sound of contemporary music recorded by female vocalists in the '80s and the '90s."[endtext]

[starttext]Bonafide (1990)

You say you're hurting oh 'cause
They say I'm flirting oh no
You just can't take it anymore
Your friends say I'm no good for you
But in my heart I'm so true
A partner for life we can be sure
You've asked me for some time to clear your mind
I stayed away it hurt so much
Without your touch
Now I'm back and you say

Just a little bit longer baby
For my love keeps growing stronger
A little more time to say
But in my head a love song plays
For you and me Ah~~ oh~

We played in the rain together
That feeling lives on forever
Memories that bring tears of joy
We've had our share of bad times too
Hurting each other me and you
It's brought us much closer in the end
Just too much we've both fought for
To put it all down the drain
I've stayed away just for a while
But now you're driving me insane

Just a little bit longer baby
For my love keeps growing stronger
A little more time to say
But in my head a love song plays
Just a little bit longer baby
For my love keeps growing stronger
A little more time to say
But in my head a love song plays
For you and me Ah~ Ah~ oh~

I said all there is to say now
Hoping that you'll make me stay
Believe me I'm yearning for you girl
Hope there's a place in your heart
That remembers the good from the start
Just put me back where I belong
You asked me for some time to clear your mind
I stayed away it hurt so much
Without your touch now I'm back and you say

Just a little bit longer baby
For my love keeps growing stronger
A little more time to say
But in my head a love song plays
Just a little bit longer baby
For my love keeps growing stronger
A little more time to say
But in my head a love song plays
For you and me Ah~ oh~[endtext]

[starttext]Yvonne Elliman - Love me 1977

Love me

I remember times my love
When we really had it all
You were always there to make me smile
To help me when I fall

Ooo I can't believe you're leaving me
When there's so much more to say
I can't let you go
Ooo Every time I look at you,
I still can feel the glow
Let it be, let it grow

Ooo Love me, please
Just a little bit longer
Together, we can make it
Our love is much too young to break it

Love me please,
Just a little bit harder
Together we can make it
Our love is much too young to break it.

Oh all I ever wanted was
To have you to myself
Then I see you standing there
In the arms of someone else

Ooo You know a girl can stand so much
and it's more than I can fake

I can't let you go
Ooo every time I look at you
I still can feel the glow
Let it be, let it grow

Ooo Love me, please
Just a little bit longer
Together, we can make it
Our love is much
Too young to break it

Love me, please
Just a little bit harder

Never even tried
to see things my way
It's hard on a woman
When love ain't no love at all

And When you walk away
From me baby you're gonna be sorry
I'm begging you please

Love me, please love me, love me
Just a little bit longer
Together we can make it
Our love is much too young to break it

Love me, please[endtext]

Oumou Sangare

The great diva Oumou Sangare was born in Bamako in 1968. From the age of five, she began to train her voice in kindergarten, with melodies from the traditions of Wassoulou her native region, located in southern Mali, about 120 km from the capital Bamako.

Since the age of 13, Oumou Sangare has been supporting her entire family with her exceptional voice. With the help if the late Ali Farka Toure, she signed with the British label World Circuit to become a star at age 21. She is one of the first Malian singers to have achieved an international reputation.

As an international artist, Oumou Sangare recently received a Grammy Award in collaboration with Herbie Hancock, Konono #1 and other artist to remake the John Lennon's superhit "Imagine". Furthermore, she performed with Tracy Chapman at the Hollywood Bowl and recorded a duet with Alicia Keys. And although she defended some aspects of her tradition, she vehemently protests, with body and soul, against the exploitation of women.

Oumou Sangare never forgets where she comes and embarked in business to create jobs in Mali through hospitality, agriculture and the importation cars. Since most of people in Mali could not afford expensive Japanese cars and unfamiliar with Chinese cars, Oumou Sangare negotiated with the Chinese to create a specific affordable vehicle targeting the African market with a Japanese engine and a Chinese body at half the cost. The model was named "Oum Sang" after her. She was also appointed FAO Ambassador in 2003 plus a UNESCO prize in 2001 and awarded the Commandeur des Arts et Lettres de la République française in 1998.

Oumou Sangare's latest album, Seya was released in 2009.[endtext]

Manu Dibango: Age 77

Manu Dibango was born in December 12, 1933 in Douala, Cameroon. was raised in a Protestant family in Cameroon, before leaving for France in 1949 where he took his first lessons in playing the saxophone.

In 1956, he left Cameroon to try his luck in Belgium. He made his debut as a stage jazz musician and a singer when he met Joseph Kabasele in Brussels who hired him as a saxophonist for his band, The African Jazz. The two friends recorded several 45 singles, all well received in Africa, where they went on tour. He became the conductor for Nino Ferrer, accompanying such artists as Mike Brandt and Dick Rivers.

But success came in 1972 when his song "Soul Makossa," sold several million copies worldwide and became a hit in the United States. In the years 1970 and 1980, Manu Dibango recorded several albums in mixes, jazz and African music, including "Super Kumba" (1974), "Africadelic" (1975), "Mélodies africaines" (1983), then Afro-electro-funk with "Abele Dance" (1984). Chaining between tours and recordings, Manu Dibango has not forgotten where he came from and is regularly committed to the African causes.

Manu Dibango continues to build bridges between continents and musical genres has produced since the beginning of his career more than thirty albums and several compilations of his work. He is currently recording his next studio album to be released in the fall of 2011.[endtext]
